We think of That Yarn as a small yarn museum. Each cone is selected the way a curator selects a piece — for what it is, and for what it represents. A specific mill. A production moment. A texture that may never be repeated.
We want makers to explore material the way artists explore paint. One cone may hold 500g to 2kg of continuous yardage — often at a fraction of skein pricing, because cone yarn is how mills make yarn before it becomes anything else. Many of the world's most interesting fibers exist only in this industrial format.
Perhaps one cone becomes a garment. Another becomes a sample, a study, or the beginning of a new idea. That is part of the joy.

Every cone is photographed and described on its own. No stock images, no copy-paste. If we can identify the mill, we tell you. If we know the original weight, fiber count, or intended end-use, we share it.
Every yarn we sell is authentic, mill-produced fiber — sourced as legitimate surplus from spinning mills and knitwear factories. Original brand labels may not appear on cones, since mill-end inventory rarely carries retail packaging. The fiber is exactly what it says.
Every order is hand-packed in Waunakee, Wisconsin and shipped within the United States via USPS Ground Advantage. Inside, you'll find small touches — a plying-guide card for your first cone yarn project, and occasional surprises chosen one order at a time.
