Yarn From Around the World
Curated cone yarn and luxury surplus yarn — sourced with intention, spun with history, dyed with culture, rescued with purpose.
From the legendary spinning mills of Italy to quiet dye houses in Japan, from Mongolian yak herds to Scottish cashmere spinners, every cone we select carries the imprint of its origin. These yarns are made by the same mills that supply Loro Piana, Brunello Cucinelli, Lemaire, and the world's most discreet fashion houses — only here, they arrive as overruns, discontinued colors, and small lots that never reached retail.
We choose for material quality, texture, and character — not for mass appeal. Wool, alpaca, cashmere, silk, yak, washi, linen — often in rare blends and small batches — arrive exactly as they leave the mill, honest and unaltered.
That Yarn exists for makers who value material knowledge, transparency, and the quiet beauty of industrial yarn in its original state. This is not trend-driven yarn. It is yarn with provenance, purpose, and a second life.
A Yarn Museum for Makers
A curated collection of cone yarn for knitting, weaving, and exploration.
Each cone is selected not only for what it can make, but for what it represents: a specific mill, a production moment, a texture that may never be repeated.
Cone yarn invites experimentation — swatching, combining, weaving, knitting without strict rules. One cone may hold 500g to 2kg of continuous yardage, often at a fraction of skein pricing, and many of the world's most interesting fibers exist only in this industrial format.
We don't believe yarn needs to be loud to be meaningful. These are quiet materials with depth, waiting to be interpreted by the hands that choose them.
Perhaps one cone will become a garment. Perhaps another becomes a sample, a study, or the beginning of a new idea. That is part of the joy.
Our Beginning on eBay
Where sharing yarn became a connection.
From the beginning, it was never just about selling yarn. It was about sharing material knowledge, answering questions, and helping each cone find its next storyteller. Many of our long-time customers discovered That Yarn there, one cone at a time.
Over 760 reviews and a perfect 5.0 rating later, we launched thatyarn.com in September 2025 — a quieter, more considered home for our curation. The eBay shop continues as That Yarn Outlet, where mill-end imperfects and overstock cones find a second life at gentler prices.
The roots remain — built on trust, transparency, and genuine connection. They continue to shape how we curate and present yarn today.
How to Trust a Yarn You Can't Touch
We know cone yarn online asks for a leap of faith. Here is what we promise.
Every yarn we sell is authentic, mill-produced fiber. Sourced as legitimate surplus from spinning mills and knitwear factories. Original brand labels may not appear on cones (mill-end inventory rarely carries retail packaging), but the fiber is the real thing — often identical to what reaches luxury retail at many times the price.
Every order is hand-packed in Waunakee, Wisconsin and shipped within the United States via USPS Ground Advantage. Inside, you'll find small touches — a plying-guide card for your first cone yarn project, and occasional surprises chosen one order at a time.
If a cone disappoints, write to us. We accept returns within 14 days. We answer emails. We are real, and we are here.
But the makers who find them, often do.
