Frequently Asked Questions.
That Yarn specializes in curated cone yarn sourced from textile mills, knitwear factories, and surplus yarn channels, primarily from Italy, Japan, and China.
Many of our yarns are industrial surplus, mill-end, or deadstock materials originally produced for professional textile production. These yarns are unused, but they may come from discontinued collections, excess mill production, or limited factory lots.
Because of this, quantities are often small and exact restocks are not guaranteed.
Yes. All yarns sold by That Yarn are new and unused.
Because many of them were originally produced for industrial use, they may not include traditional retail packaging, branded labels, or consumer-facing tags.
Deadstock yarn refers to unused yarn left from mill production, factory overstock, discontinued collections, or surplus textile manufacturing.
These yarns are not secondhand. They are unused materials that already exist within the textile supply chain.
Cone yarn offers flexibility for hand knitting, machine knitting, weaving, and textile experimentation.
Many cone yarns are fine, allowing makers to hold multiple strands together, adjust fabric density, combine textures, or create custom yarn blends.
Cone yarns are often spun for industrial knitting machines, which commonly use finer yarn counts.
If you are knitting by hand, you can:
- hold 2–4 strands together
- use them for lace or lightweight garments
- combine yarns to create custom textures
- swatch first to test gauge, shrinkage, and fabric behavior
Nm is a yarn count system used in the textile industry. It indicates how many meters of yarn weigh one gram.
For example, Nm 2/30 means two strands of 30 Nm yarn twisted together.
- Higher Nm = finer yarn
- Lower Nm = thicker yarn
If you are knitting by hand, finer yarns can be held together in multiple strands to achieve the desired thickness.
For a more detailed explanation, please see: Understanding Yarn Weight (Nm)
Yarn naturally absorbs moisture from the air. A variation of 20–40g per 1000g due to humidity is normal in the textile industry and does not affect quality.
The listed weight on our product pages refers to net yarn weight, with approximately 40g deducted for the cone itself unless otherwise noted.
We photograph our yarns carefully to represent their colors as accurately as possible.
Slight differences may occur due to:
- lighting during photography
- screen or monitor settings
- dye lot variation
- natural fiber characteristics
Slight variation is part of the character of textile materials and is not considered a defect.
