🧶 About Our Yarn
What kind of yarn does That Yarn sell?
That Yarn specializes in cone yarn sourced from premium textile mills, primarily from Italy, Japan, and China.
Most yarns are industrial surplus (deadstock) originally produced for fashion houses and textile manufacturers. These yarns are unused but may come from discontinued collections or excess mill production.
Because of this, many yarns are limited in quantity and may not be restocked once sold out.
Are your yarns new?
Yes. All yarns sold by That Yarn are new and unused.
However, they may not come in traditional retail packaging because they were originally produced for industrial knitting machines and textile production.
Why are cone yarns thinner than regular yarn?
Cone yarns are typically spun for industrial knitting machines, which often use finer yarn counts.
If you are knitting by hand, you can:
• hold 2–4 strands together
• use them for lace or lightweight garments
• combine yarns to create custom textures
What does Nm mean?
Nm is a yarn count system used in the textile industry.
It indicates how many meters of yarn weigh one gram.
Example:
Nm 2/30 means two strands of 30 Nm yarn twisted together.
For reference:
Higher Nm → thinner yarn
Lower Nm → thicker yarn
If you're knitting by hand, finer yarns can be held together in multiple strands to achieve the desired thickness.
For a more detailed explanation and yarn weight conversion, please see:
→Understanding Yarn Weight (Nm)
Why might the yarn weight vary slightly?
Yarn naturally absorbs moisture from the air.
A variation of 20–40g per 1000g due to humidity is normal in the textile industry and does not affect quality.
The listed weight on our product pages refers to net yarn weight, with approximately 40g deducted for the cone itself.
Will the yarn color match the photos exactly?
We photograph our yarns carefully to represent their colors as accurately as possible.
However, slight differences may occur due to:
• lighting during photography
• screen or monitor settings
• dye lot variation
• natural fiber characteristics
Minor color variation is normal and not considered a defect.
Are you affiliated with the original yarn brands?
No.
That Yarn is not affiliated with or endorsed by the original manufacturers.
We independently source surplus yarn from mills and textile factories.

Frequently Asked Questions.
We specialize in cone-packaged yarns sourced from high-end mills around the world.
Most of our yarns are mill ends—unused surplus from fashion and textile production.
They’re originally intended for machine knitting or weaving, but can absolutely be used for hand knitting as well—just hold multiple strands together to achieve the desired thickness.
In addition to cones, we also carry a curated selection of hand-dyed yarns and wool for spinning.
Need help with that? We offer a handy Ply Reference Guide to help you combine strands confidently.
We sell yarn by the cone, and do not provide rewinding services.
Each cone weighs approximately 35g–42g, depending on its size and material. The weight listed for all yarns refers to the net yarn weight, after deducting 40g for the cone.
Please note: Due to environmental humidity and storage conditions, a moisture regain of 20g–40g per 1000g of yarn is considered normal. This is an industry-accepted variation and does not affect product quality.
To preserve your yarn’s condition, we recommend storing it in a sealed bag when not in use.
Thank you for your understanding!
Simply browse our collection, add your chosen yarns to the cart, and proceed to checkout. We accept major credit cards and secure payment options. If you run into any issues, feel free to reach out—we’re happy to help.
Due to the unique shape and structure of cone yarns, we currently use sturdy cardboard boxes with secure tape to package your order. If one box cannot fit the entire order, we’ll carefully pack your yarn into multiple boxes to ensure safe delivery. This method helps keep your yarn protected while staying eco-conscious. If you are ordering as a gift and have special requests, feel free to leave us a note at checkout—we’ll do our best to accommodate.
Orders are typically processed within 2–3 business days. Once shipped, you’ll receive a tracking number via email. We use USPS Ground Advantage for reliable, trackable delivery within the U.S.
Standard USPS delivery time is 4–8 business days, but occasional delays can happen. If there is no tracking update for 7 consecutive days, we will file a Missing Mail Search Request with USPS on your behalf. If there is no tracking movement for 25 consecutive days, we will consider the package lost and issue you a full refund.
Thanks for your understanding and patience!
Not at this time—we’re currently an online-only shop. However, if you're based in the U.S., our standard shipping should reach you fairly quickly. We're always exploring more community-friendly options for the future.
You may return your order within 14 days of delivery as long as the yarn is unused and in original condition. Because most of our yarns are unique and available in limited quantities, we do not offer exchanges. Return shipping costs are the responsibility of the customer. A 10% restocking fee will be deducted from the refund amount. Sale and discounted items are final sale and cannot be returned or exchanged.
Before sending anything back, please email us at hello@thatyarn.com with your order number, and we’ll guide you through the return process.
That Yarn reserves the right of final interpretation.
