Weaving vs Knitting: Same Yarn, Different Behaviour
Hand the same cone to a knitter and a weaver, and they'll make two fabrics that behave nothing alike — one stretchy and soft, one stable and crisp. The reason isn't the yarn. It's the structure.
A question that comes up often, especially from knitters eyeing a shelf of weaving cones: is weaving yarn different from knitting yarn? Mostly, no. The same cone of wool or cotton can be knitted or woven. But the fabric you get will be profoundly different, because knitting and weaving build cloth in two fundamentally different ways — and understanding that difference tells you what any yarn will do in either craft, and which one to reach for.
The one structural difference that explains everything
Everything about how knitted and woven fabrics behave flows from a single difference in how they're built.
Knitting builds fabric from loops. A single strand of yarn is formed into rows of interlocking loops, each row drawn through the one below. If you look closely at a knitted fabric, you'll see rows of little interlocked chains. Those loops can open and close and slide against one another, which is the whole secret of knitting's character.
Weaving builds fabric from interlacing. Two separate sets of yarn — the lengthwise warp and the crosswise weft — cross over and under one another at right angles, like a woven basket or a checkerboard. The threads are held straight and taut, locked in a stable grid rather than looped.
Loops versus a grid. That's the entire root of the difference, and everything else follows from it.
A knit is loops; a weave is a grid. Loops can slide and stretch and recover; a grid holds firm and straight. Once you see cloth this way, every difference between knitting and weaving stops being a rule to memorise and becomes something you can simply reason out.
What the difference does: stretch, drape, and stability
Because loops can move and a grid cannot, the two fabrics behave in opposite ways — and these are the differences you actually feel in the finished cloth.
Stretch
Knitting stretches, and generously; the loops open up and slide, letting a knitted fabric give in every direction and spring back. Depending on fiber and stitch, knits can stretch dramatically. Weaving barely stretches at all: the interlaced grid holds firm, and a woven fabric gives only a little, mostly on the diagonal (the "bias"), unless an elastic fiber has been woven in. This is why knits make comfortable, close-fitting garments, and wovens make structured ones.
Drape and hand
Knits tend to be soft, fluid, and cosy, draping around the body and conforming to shape. Wovens are more structured and crisp, holding a shape rather than following the body. Neither is better — a fluid drape and a crisp structure are simply different goals.
Stability and durability
The woven grid is exceptionally stable and hard-wearing, which is why weaving is chosen for things that must hold up and hold shape: upholstery, rugs, tea towels, structured garments. Knits, all those mobile loops, are more elastic but less inherently stable, and can snag or run. The trade is flexibility against firmness.

Why the same yarn behaves differently in each
Here is the part that surprises people, and it's the most useful idea in this whole comparison: a yarn's stretch and structure come as much from how the fabric is built as from the fiber itself.
Take an inelastic cotton. Knitted, it makes a fabric with some give — not because the cotton stretches, but because the loops can open and move, lending the fabric a flexibility the yarn doesn't have on its own. Woven, that same cotton makes a stable, crisp cloth with almost no stretch, because the grid locks the threads straight. One cone, two completely different fabrics — and the difference is structure, not fiber.
This is the same principle that runs through so much of how yarn works: what a fabric does is decided as much by construction as by material. It's why a chainette yarn is stretchy though its fiber may not be, and why novelty yarns get their character from how they're built. What it means for choosing yarn
So does the yarn matter at all? Yes — but in different ways for each craft, and knowing how frees you to use one cupboard of yarn for both.
For knitting, almost any yarn works, because the loop structure provides flexibility regardless of the fiber. Even an inelastic fiber knits into a workable fabric. The choice is mostly about softness, warmth, and how the yarn shows a stitch.
For weaving, the demands split in two. The warp — held under tension and abraded on the loom — needs to be strong, smooth, and low-stretch, so a firm plied yarn suits it best. The weft is free: soft, delicate, or textured yarns all work, because the weft bears no tension. Which should you choose?
If you're deciding which craft suits a project, let the fabric you want lead. Choose knitting when you want stretch, softness, and a garment that moves with the body — sweaters, socks, hats, anything close-fitting and cosy. Choose weaving when you want stable, structured, hard-wearing cloth — tea towels, scarves with crisp drape, blankets, upholstery, tailored fabric.
